Camille Gordon woke with a start, alone in her marital bed. Dawn stuttered through the window, sluggish and dull, like her awakening. How.... Her mind and sight were clouded with a thick fog. Her fingers clutched at the soft bedding, remembering the feel of carvings in wood. What did they say?

She still wore the clothes from her forbidden errand. Mud caked her skirts and was crusted between the toes of her bare feet. Camille ran her hands over her belly. The bump was no longer. Her womb was empty and shrunken. It was true. She took it away. She was empty inside again.

A clack and rap-tap at the window startled her. A peculiar bird tapped at the thin pane. Its large beak was pink, and it had snow-white feathers. It looked and sounded like a corvid. A white crow? Camille had never known such a bird to exist. It frightened her. Its tapping grew more incessant, cracking the glass.

Beady turquoise eyes stared at the woman, head tilting with curiosity. She mimicked the bird's movement, captivated by the creature. Camille blinked, and the white crow was gone.

Her husband would be home soon.
